Sometimes male writers have a challenging time writing strong female leads but this is not the case with author Lawrence Ambrose's character Thalma Engstrom. She is real, flawed and three dimensional with a great sarcastic wit which is great for a book like this filled with gallows humor. The secondary character of Louis is also very well written. I was genuinely frightened for him during the chapter on his incarceration. The novel is part avant-garde and part postmodern and the blending seems to work. The action moves at an adequate pace but the character development is what makes this novel worth reading. It's a great character study. Then after all is said and done we are treated to an ending that fits perfectly into this story. Louis tells her "You're definitely one of a kind." And she is. Recommended.Product details

Not so good.
This is definitely among my favorites from Mr. Ambrose. An exciting page-turner, with great characters and a fast-paced story. Very highly recommended!
Just a little far fetch, on how the main character meets someone and in 24 hrs. Is telling him all her secrets .
This author emailed me recently and offered a free copy of one of his books in exchange for an honest review. Boy, am I glad he did. I read that first book, reviewed it and then immediately went to the store to buy another one of his books. I chose One Rule. I chose well -)
Mr. Ambrose writes a really good female lead. A lot of male writers attempt this but they aren't always successful. The lead in this book is awesome. She's like a crime boss, with a heart. She's the perfect mix of gangsta and James bond. I loved this character and the story that surrounded her. This book has action, drugs, crime, police chases, shootouts, a Rottie and was a little bit of a love story.
I couldn't read it fast enough and I was truly sad when it ended.
When I read a book I've paid for with my hard-earned money, I want it to be good. Sometimes I read a few pages of a book and, if I'm not convinced the author knows what he/she is doing, or if I just find that the characters or the plot seem dull, boring, and not going anywhere, I stop and forget it. Which leads me to Lawrence Ambrose and One Rule No Rules.
I knew in the first couple of pages that Ambrose is an excellent writer. I fell right into the story. The characters seemed real immediately, and the plot as it progressed was a wild ride. There's a point in some books where I sort of surface from the action and ask myself, do I want to suspend disbelief and immerse myself in this? In this case, I dove in without a qualm. I'll tell you one thing you've never met a female protagonist quite like Thalma Engstrom.
