This book is a classic. Its definitely not a book for extremely religious people to read. Mr. Twain's wisdom concerning human nature is on almost every page. I believe he took a lot of heat for this book at the time. But what must have frustrated the critics is, there is nothing in it concerning human behavior that is not true. This is the book they should have kids read in school, rather than Tom Sawyer. I was hoping to get an older edition for my collection, the book I received was not only brand new, it apparently was printed two days before I received it! Amazon continues to amaze, I'm glad I'm not in competition with them.

The Mysterious Stranger edition by Mark Twain Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

It's been a while since I read Mark Twain. There were three short stories at the end and, especially the one about the burglar alarm, I was reminded just how hysterically Mr. Twain is able to write. The Mysterious Stranger, a short book, presented me with much occasion to think. I highlighted a lot, wondering if the thoughts presented were Mr. Twain's own beliefs or his presentation of someone else. Regardless, it reminded me of why I believe what I believe and why I do what I do. Many people ask questions about God and Christianity, and they don't get satisfactory answers. They leave hurt or betrayed or angry. It's important to me to answer well when these questions come up, and to do so honestly. Anyway, I was thankful for a differing perspective on God, Christianity, and reality itself. It helped me think more deeply about my own faith. Maybe this book will help others do the same.
Of course I'm not going to actually tell you WHO the mysterious stranger is. That would just ruin it and you wouldn't need to read it for yourself. Though I did spend most of the book wondering if he was who he claimed to be, or if he was actually his namesake.

Mark Twain can be very hard to read, but this was not the case. Set in Austria around the times of witch burnings, this book sets itself apart from most of Twain's works. There is no phonetical dialogue that he oft uses, and I personally find very hard to read.

This story is surprisingly philosophical. while there is a faint religion connotation, it is not heavy handed. How many times have you wondered, or heard others say, "How could there be a God that would allow..." insert any phrase of injustice. While Twain does not specifically phrase it that way exactly he give some great hypotheses as to how one scenario which contains suffering is actually more merciful than an alternative possibility.

Mark Twain also touches on human behavior and the whole "go along to get along" mentality. This book is only 68 pages, a very easy read but provides a LOT of food for thought for such a short volume. I highly recommend it, especially to those who have started to think there is no book written by Mark Twain that they could possibly like.
A really intriguing story, if a bit uneven. I came to learn this was published posthumously, and so many be there was some re-writing and editing to be done still to the ms. before publication, so I can’t fault it for some of the minor inconsistencies. Overall I loved the story of the angel Satan (nephew of the namesake devil) and his rumination on creation, morality, good, and evil. Some of the elements where minor changes in the daily of a person could radically shift the overall course of their life and eternal fate were intriguing, though it didn’t all fit together quite perfectly with what had come before, Satan being portrayed by turns as a capricious trickster, a guardian angel, or a wish-granting djinn across the course of a single story.
Twain died before completing the manuscript to this story, but his publisher stitched together a working completion of his story. The Mysterious Stranger is one of Twain's most audacious, humorous and nihilistic stories---the humor is often dark, the ending rather depressing---we are left to question our own fate in life, as we, like the character of Theodor, fall prey to our dreamlike existence as opposed to our real-life persona. It's a fairly easy read, but like most of Twain's works, warrants a re-read to catch the various idiosyncrasies that lurk within his stories. I highly enjoyed this piece and if you enjoy Twain, you'll like it as well and know what you're getting into ahead of time.
I read this book when I was about ten years old. It affected me greatly, for several reasons. I had never experienced such deep emotions. I had never given any thought to life, or death, or the why is it all. I understand that Mr. Clemens had lost a child, and grieved for years afterward. He could make no sense of the idea of religion. If there is a God, as he was always taught, a kind and forgiving God, how could God take life away so carelessly. Unlike few others could, then and now, he put his feelings into words. The book is intriguing, astonishing, and mysterious. I just read it again - 65 years later! I feel the same. What a gift to Mankind was Mark Twain!
I have for years been intrigued which "The Mysterious Stranger", but have discovered the story which appears in any number of Twain anthologies is regarded as a literary fraud, Twain worked on the story for years and produced at least 3 (or 4) very different versions, all left in more-or-less incomplete states. Two of them were combined after his death, with a lot of re-writing and editing, then published as a completed work, which it was not. This volume contains the original manuscripts and one can observe for themselves how the author toyed with so many different twists and turns for something he could just never get together (one version does have an ending, and is more complete than the others, but still with plenty of plot and narrative holes). This book in not recommended as a work of literature per se, but rather as a peep into the creative process, which sometime fails (the above mentioned literary fraud is actually a more cohesive and interesting tale).
